Chapter Eleven

He let her go. Why didn’t he stop her, diffuse the situation, preferably with a hot and passionate kiss? Instead, he let her go without a word. Beth expected something from him. Even if it wasn’t an admission that he’d just been a dick. He could have gone down the road of ‘don’t be angry, we can fix this’ or even ‘you’ve misunderstood what I said, baby girl.’

Did she misunderstand what he’d said? Beth didn’t think so.

She could have him but only if circumstances changed. This must be what her mother referred to when they spoke about giving up something for the one you loved. If she gave up working for him, then she and Marcus could be together. Well fuck that, she enjoyed what she did. And besides, what was Marcus offering to forgo so they could be together—a big fat nothing.

Working together should strengthen their relationship. Seeing Marcus every day was no hardship, their work relationship never faltered because of their attraction before. Once they sorted out the personal stuff, if they could, then everything should go back to business as usual. They’d be just like her parents in the cafe, living together, working side by side—subtract the coffee and add in the danger, of course.

Unless the team was so unhappy with her, they requested he boot her out. God, would that happen? More importantly, would Marcus allow that? Maybe his you won’t be doing any more missions was just a ruse, so she didn’t hate the team.

Standing at the top of the stairs, Beth paused. The evening crowd was milling around, waiting for the live demonstrations to begin. Everyone looked so relaxed as if they didn’t have a care in the world. Even the staff appeared relaxed and happy. She envied them. Uncomplicated work, the ability to have a social life with no reason to collect information or be suspicious of anyone. If Marcus continued to be an ass, maybe she’d ask Zane to employ her here, at The Dungeon. Her other option if he continued to be an ass was just kicking him in it and telling him to deal. Not very submissive-like behavior, but it could be effective.

“Are you going to come down from there, or are you going to make this old man walk up the stairs?” Beth shook her head and laughed at Steve Jax who leaned against the railing, one foot on the first step of the curved staircase before her.

Steve Jax was a cop in the Highlands and was a bit like a big brother figure to Beth. She’d known him ever since he’d shown up looking for his sister years ago. The guy was cool. Well, cool for someone in his forties. He eventually married her Aunt Rhia who he’d made happier than Beth ever expected the woman would be. He was friends with her parents but also worked for Marcus occasionally. The Steve/Marcus connection went back years, not that Beth knew the details. Old missions generally weren’t discussed, they lived in the now where assignments were concerned.
